Introduction to Water Purity

Water is probably the most important commodity on the planet, yet 97% of the worlds water is salty or otherwise undrinkable, 2% is stored in glaciers and the ice caps 1% IS LEFT FOR HUMANITY’S NEEDS. Evolution: Microbes are Evolving - is Man?

19th Century - Darwin & Pasteur - the Dawn of Understanding

Approximately 100 years ago, the World changed radically with the evidence produced by two great scientists - Louis Pasteur and Charles Darwin.  Pasteur proved that diseases were caused by tiny creatures called microbes.  He also proved that these "microbes" could be destroyed by heating a liquid to a high temperature.  Darwin on the other hand proved the Theory of Evolution.  In the 19th and 20th centuries, the use of heat and chlorine undoubtedly saved thousands of lives.  Yet as Darwin had proved, the use of chemicals and heat as a long term defence against deadly microbes, was a flawed plan.  Evolution has spawned heat resistant and chemical resistant microbes.  These microbes are now tougher and deadlier than their their predecessors.

In the 19th century, if a wound became infected, it was likely that a limb would be amputated.  Just as crudely, man believed in the 19th Century that chemicals such as chlorine would erradicate harmful microbes.  Yet as microbes have evolved, many water treatment companies have simply increased the chemical dose to higher and higher levels, with less and less success.  In the 21st Century, wounds are now being treated with far more skill and dexterity.  So why are many water treatment companies still using outdated and often ineffective chemical treatments? Some people blame this on the vested interests of chemical suppliers, whilst others argue that in a market economy, the customer is to blame for not demanding an alternative.

20th Century - Facing the Facts

An eco journalist recently compared the chemical water treatment industry buyer-supplier relationship to King Canute on his throne, demanding that the tides of change be halted.  Yet one cannot reason with microbes nor can one prevent their proliferation by having a brand name change.  If microbes are now making a meal of corrosion inhibitors, shrugging off hot temperatures, evolving to defy chemical compounds, then one must take a leaf out of Darwin's book and evolve one's anti-microbial strategy accordingly.

Despite living in our air-conditioned, high-tech world full of gadgets, humans are still very frail, very susceptible creatures.  Microbes live in the real world.
